Fly fishing can be somewhat difficult for beginners. It takes some time to master and some techniques have to be known. The first think that you need to consider when fly fishing are the type of insects that the fish are feeding on and where are the fish feeding. The location that they are feeding is the location with the most fish. You also have to consider the fly pattern of the fish. If you are a beginner fly fisher here are some techniques that will be very helpful. The first technique is matching the hatch. This basically means that you should get the larvae, nymphs etc that the fish are feeding on that season. Without this, fly fishing will be a bit difficult. Fish will not bite if there isn’t something desirable as bait. Another great technique is knowing where to cast your fly. Fish like places that provide a protective covering for them such as logs or deep. Fish also like to be near a source of food. This is usually places where there are a lot of insects and sunlight. These are the places where the most fish will be. If you match the hatch and are in the right location you will have some success.

For the fishing enthusiast, the East Coast is a goldmine of great fishing spots, certain to provide a place to drop a line. Fishermen heading to Connecticut should try Saint Mary’s by the Sea in Bridgeport. March through June and September through November are peak fishing periods. Cape Cod in Massachusetts is great for prime, deep sea fishing. When in New York, make Ausable River a destination as well as the Batten Kill River which also makes its way into Vermont. For those who love Salmon, the Salmon River of New York has national renown, hosting yearly fishing contests with a salmon fish hatchery in the town of Pulaski to see the beginning and end of the salmons’ journey. The Pequest River is a hot spot in New Jersey for fresh water fishing in addition to taking to the coast for salt water fishing. The Lackawaxen River is highly recommended in Pennsylvania. Head to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for fly fishing, surf and pier fishing, fresh water or the sound for ample opportunities of every kind of fishing. Head further south to Fort Pierce, Vero Beach, and Cocoa Beach, Florida for excellent charter fishing. East coast fishing opportunities abound.

There are so many great places to fish in the Carolinas. Here are a few good recommendations. The Davidson River in North Carolina is a great destination for trout fishermen. There is also a hatchery-part of this river that is a stocked. Across North Carolina, there are some lakes named Lake Higgins, Lake Brandt and Lake Townsend. These lakes have excellent bass fishing. The bass are very large in these three lakes. The lakes get stocked frequently with threadfin shad to keep the bass well fed. Lake Townsend gets stocked with large gizzard shad. Many fisherman find great fishing for mackerel along Nearshore, North Carolina. They can be found along the beaches during September. Nearshore reefs and ledges are a great place to fish. All the major streams on the North Carolina side of the Smokies have amazing trout fishing. Deep Creek, which is near Newfound Gap, is known for its wild brown trout. The best fishing waters are only accessible by hiking in for several miles. In South Carolina you can catch crappie at Barnwell State Park and Lake Warren State Park. You can also try Table Rock, Keowee-Toxaway, and Devils Fork and fish for trout. All of these parks have some very large trout.

As anyone who has ever done it can tell you, hiking is an amazing experience. Not only is it a great way to exercise, but it is also a terrific way to connect with nature, explore beautiful sights and occasionally, meet some great people. There are great hiking trails throughout the country, but some of the absolute best ones can be found nestled in the northwest. Here is just a small sample of the trails to hike in the Northwest. Avalanche Lake Trail in Montana is a relatively short (2 miles one way) trail that offers stunning views of the Montana landscape, including, mountains, waterfalls and spectacular lake views. Another amazing trail you will find in the northwest is Washington’s Adams Glacier Meadows Trail. At a distance of 3 miles and a max elevation of 6500 feet, you are bound to find amazing views along your hike. From beautiful meadows to views of Mount Adams, you will not be disappointed in the sights. Lastly, Oregon’s Cooper Spur trail is simply beautiful. With a distance of 7 miles and max elevation of 8300 feet, Cooper Spur features amazing views including glaciers, mountains, and at one point most of Oregon and Washington!
